Shopify product photos with a consistent grid
Shopify does not police your images the way a marketplace does — it is your storefront, so nothing gets suppressed for being off-white. That freedom is exactly why Shopify catalogues drift: one product shot on white, the next on a wooden board, a third cropped portrait, and the collection grid ends up looking like three different shops.
The thing worth optimising for on Shopify is consistency at thumbnail size. Square images at a uniform size, with the product occupying roughly the same proportion of every frame, make a collection page read as a single catalogue. The Shopify preset generates the whole set against one canvas and one fill ratio so the grid lines up.
Shopify product image specifications
Shopify serves resized variants automatically, so upload the largest good-quality file you have and let the platform generate the thumbnails.
| Requirement | Specification |
|---|---|
| Recommended dimensions | 2048 × 2048 pxSquare. Shopify’s own recommendation for product images. |
| Maximum dimensions | 4472 × 4472 pxRoughly 20 megapixels. Larger files are rejected. |
| Maximum file size | 20 MBPer image. |
| Aspect ratio | 1:1 square recommendedPick one ratio and use it for every product in the store. |
| File formats | JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, GIFJPEG for photography, PNG when you need transparency. |
| Colour mode | sRGBAvoid CMYK — colours shift in the browser. |
| Background | Your choice, but uniformWhite and very light neutrals hold up best against theme backgrounds. |
| Alt text | Required for accessibility and image SEODescribe the product, not the photo. |
| Images per product | Up to 250Four to eight is the practical sweet spot. |
Figures reflect Shopify’s published product media guidance. Themes may apply their own crop, so preview a new size on your live theme before re-uploading a whole catalogue.
How to build a consistent Shopify product photo set
The goal is a collection grid where nothing jumps out for the wrong reason.
- 01
Fix one canvas for the whole store
Decide on square 2048 × 2048 and apply it to every product, including the ones already live. A mixed grid of squares and portraits is the single most visible sign of an amateur catalogue.
- 02
Generate the set from one source photo
Upload your product shot and select the Shopify preset with a main image, two or three detail crops and one lifestyle scene. Generating them together keeps colour and finish identical across the set.
- 03
Match the product fill across products
Keep the product occupying a similar share of the frame for every item in a collection. A mug that fills 90% next to a mug that fills 50% makes the second look smaller rather than differently framed.
- 04
Export, upload and write alt text
Download at 2048 × 2048, upload to the product, and set the first image as the featured image. Write alt text that describes the product — it is read by screen readers and indexed by image search.
Each image in the finished set costs one credit — 1 credit = 1 image. See pricing.
Shopify image questions
Should Shopify product images be square or portrait?
Square is the safer default: most themes crop to square or contain within a square for collection grids, so a square upload survives every layout. Portrait can look better on a hero image, but only commit to it if your theme is built for it — and then use it everywhere.
Does image size affect Shopify page speed?
Yes, but less than people fear. Shopify serves resized, format-converted variants from its CDN, so uploading 2048 × 2048 does not mean shipping a 2048px file to a phone. Uploading a 6000px camera original is still wasteful, and anything over 4472 × 4472 is rejected.
Do I need a white background on Shopify?
No requirement, but it is the most forgiving choice. White cut-outs sit cleanly on light and dark themes, survive theme changes, and can be reused verbatim when you list the same product on Amazon or eBay.
How many images per product should I have?
Four to eight: a main image, two or three detail crops, one or two lifestyle scenes, and a scale or packaging shot where the size is not obvious. Beyond that, the marginal image rarely earns its place in the gallery.
Can I reuse these images on other marketplaces?
The lifestyle and detail shots, yes. The main image usually needs regenerating for Amazon, which enforces pure white at 2000 × 2000 with an 85% fill — switch presets and re-export from the same source photo.
What about transparent PNGs?
Transparency is useful when your theme renders products over a coloured section, but it makes the image harder to reuse and larger to serve. Flattening onto white is the more portable default; export a PNG when you specifically need the cut-out.
