Etsy listing photos that survive the thumbnail crop

Etsy buyers browse a dense grid of thumbnails, and the thumbnail is a crop — not your whole image. Etsy displays listing images in a 4:5 portrait ratio in search results, so a wide landscape photo gets its sides cut off before anyone has a chance to click. A beautiful image that crops badly loses to an ordinary image that crops well.

The other Etsy-specific pressure is character. Etsy rewards images that look handmade and contextual rather than catalogue-sterile — a wooden surface, natural light, a hand for scale. That is a lifestyle brief, not a cut-out brief, and it is what the Etsy preset generates alongside the clean shots.

Etsy listing image specifications

Etsy resizes on upload, so the number that matters most is the shortest side and the ratio you compose for.

How to shoot an Etsy listing set from one photo

Ten slots, one thumbnail that has to earn the click, and a portrait crop to design around.

  1. 01

    Upload your best single shot

Pick the photo where the product is sharpest and most completely visible. Natural daylight from a window beats overhead room lighting, but the preset re-lights the scene anyway, so focus matters more than lighting.

  2. 02

Generate for the 4:5 crop first

Select the Etsy preset and generate the hero shot composed for 4:5 portrait, with the product centred and clear of the left and right edges. This is the image the grid will show, so it decides your click-through rate.

  3. 03

    Fill the remaining slots

Add detail crops for texture and craftsmanship, a lifestyle scene showing the item in use, and a scale reference. Etsy shoppers are buying a made object — the close-ups of material and finish do real work here.

  4. 04

Export at 2000px and order the gallery deliberately

Download at 2000px on the shortest side, then upload with the strongest 4:5 image in position one. Order the rest as hero, context, detail, scale, packaging.

Each image in the finished set costs one credit — 1 credit = 1 image. See pricing.

Etsy image questions

What size should Etsy photos be?

2000 px on the shortest side is Etsy’s recommendation. Uploading 2000 × 2000 square is the simplest way to satisfy it while leaving Etsy room to crop to 4:5 without losing resolution.

Why do my Etsy thumbnails look cropped?

Because they are. Etsy displays listing images at 4:5 portrait in search results. A landscape image loses its left and right thirds. Compose the first image with the product centred and a margin on both sides.

Does Etsy require a white background?

No, and a plain white background is often the weaker choice on Etsy. Buyers there respond to context and craft — a textured surface, natural light, a prop that suggests use. Keep one clean shot in the set for clarity, but let the hero have character.

How many photos should an Etsy listing have?

Use all ten slots if you can. Etsy’s own guidance is that listings with more photos convert better, and the extra slots are free. At minimum: hero, two details, one in-use scene, one scale reference.

Can I add text to my Etsy photos?

Etsy permits it, unlike an Amazon main image. Keep it off the first photo — text does not survive the thumbnail crop legibly — and use it on later slots for sizing charts or variant labels.

Do generated lifestyle scenes count as misleading?

They must represent the actual item accurately. Use generated scenes to show plausible context and scale, not to imply materials, sizes or included accessories that the buyer will not receive. Accuracy is both an Etsy policy matter and a returns-rate matter.
